Growing up
New interactive resources developed in Gwynedd give teachers confidence to deliver sex and relationships education.
The impact of a new interactive, bi-lingual sex and relationships education resource called Tyfu i Fyny/Growing Up has been published in an article in the latest Health Education journal. The article written by Judith Roberts, Senior Gwynedd Healthy Schools Practitioner, was one of only six papers chosen for publication internationally in a special issue of Sexuality Education.
The article describes the development of teaching resources for primary schools suitable for students aged 5 to 12 years. It also discusses the support provided for teachers and parents and an initial evaluation following their use. Health Education Journal is a leading peer reviewed journal which publishes high quality papers on health education and health promotion.
Tyfu i Fyny/Growing Up comprises of two components. The first is an interactive floor mat suitable for teaching students aged between 5 and 12 years about the body, personal safety, puberty changes and other health promotion activities. The second component is an interactive electronic web-based programme suitable for teaching students aged 9 to 12 years about puberty, loving relationships, conception, pregnancy and birth.
Judith Roberts, said, “I am delighted that my article has been chosen internationally and that my work in developing and evaluating the impact of Tyfu i Fyny/Growing Up on sex and relationships education within primary schools has been published in the Health Education Journal.
“Evidence from the evaluation demonstrates that the resources have impacted positively on the teaching and learning experiences of primary teachers and students. It also demonstrates how the teacher training sessions and using the Tyfu i Fyny/Growing Up resources have increased the confidence of teachers in delivering sex and relationships education. Students have expressed their enjoyment of learning using the resources. The success within Gwynedd has resulted in all primary schools throughout Wales being able to obtain these resources.”
